Offshore Wind

4Subsea brings proven subsea expertise from the oil & gas sector to support energy providers operating in the ocean space. We’ve been developing solutions for offshore wind projects since 2010, and we’re committed to contributing to the energy transition by enabling efficient and reliable renewable technologies, built on domain knowledge and field-proven digital tools. We deliver value by combining engineering insight, reliable monitoring solutions, and digital services to turn complex data into actionable results enabling decision-making that improves performance and reduces risk.

4Subsea Core Services for Offshore Wind

  • Structural Health Monitoring: Foundation and Tower structural monitoring solutions to calibrate design models and enable Lifetime Extension.
  • Motion Monitoring: Campaign-based motion monitoring of offshore wind assets, from installation of foundations to cables and CPS systems.
  • Lifetime extension:
  • Engineering Services: From system design and coupled analysis to cable configurations and installation.

Structural Health Monitoring

Structural health monitoring of wind turbines during installation and operation with sensor solutions measuring fatigue and motion along with relevant environmental conditions gives deeper insight into structural responses. Data is streamed continuously to our digital platform, 4insight®, where it is processed using advanced algorithms and machine learning models to provide insight into critical structural response parameters and service life estimates.

  • End-to-end system deliveries to monitor the structural response of the foundation and tower using robust sensors, enabling design verification and lifetime extension assessments. The data may be stored on 4Subsea’s cloud-based digital platform 4insight® and processed using advanced algorithms and machine learning models to provide insight into critical structural response parameters and projected lifetime estimates.

  • 4Subsea’s delivers fully compliant monitoring systems designed to meet both industry standards and specific operator or project requirements.

  • Sensors will be selected depending on project needs, either using in-house developed 6-DOF motion sensors and strain sensors or 3rd  party electrical or optical strain gauges matched with accelerometers and inclinometers.

  • 4Subsea delivers Structural health monitoring services from system design, to installation, commissioning and data storage, processing and visualisation.

  • Data is stored, processed and visualised on the digital platform 4insight® using algorithms for assessing Structural Health and Lifetime Assessments. Through our digital deliveries, 4Subsea contextualise and analyses key performance data for calibration of design models, integrity assessments and service life predictions. Local on-premise solutions may also be tailored based on project and operator needs.

Motion Monitoring for Offshore Wind

4Subsea’s sensors and monitoring solutions provide critical data for offshore wind asset integrity evaluations. By measuring accelerations and rotations where needed, the sensors deliver the data required for wind farm operators to make informed, data-driven decisions. Insights from this data help improve operations, extend asset life, and reduce operational costs.

With data access through 4insight® and advanced data processing, our solutions offer visibility into key asset motion measurements. Built for offshore conditions, 4Subsea’s sensors ensure reliability and accuracy in challenging environments. These solutions help engineers and operators maintain control, maximise efficiency, and optimise asset performance.

Applications:

  • Static cables and CPS systems
  • Dynamic cables
  • Mooring lines
  • Fixed and Floating Foundations

Lifetime Extension of Wind Turbines

Lifetime extension of offshore wind assets is becoming increasingly important as more operational wind turbines approach the end of their design life. To comply with standards, rules, and regulations for lifetime extension, it is necessary to verify the status and integrity of assets, both wind turbines, substations, and cables, before documenting continued safe operation beyond the original design life. This process involves combining analysis, monitoring, and inspections.

We have decades of experience in performing lifetime extension of offshore structures, combining domain expertise with practical experience and advanced analytical tools. Our retrofit sensors are ideal for lifetime extension assessments. When combined with our digital platform, 4insight® for data processing, we can provide key insights into the structural response of towers and foundations.

Engineering Services

4Subsea combines advanced analytical tools and highly skilled engineers with experience from the ocean space to support our clients’ challenges. We provide both cost-efficient solutions and concepts for new developments as well as critical decision support to operators of both fixed and floating wind systems.

Substation and wind turbines

Bottom-fixed wind

We leverage decades of experience in the ocean space and our advanced analytical tools to provide critical decision support to operators of fixed wind farms.

  • Traditionally, loads on fixed wind foundations are found through an iterative process (ILA) between the foundation designer and turbine OEM. The ILA is time-consuming, not tailored for the foundation design and restricts an optimum design process for the foundation designer. With a coupled model of the foundation and turbine, the foundation designer is less dependent on the turbine OEM’s load iteration process. This enables design iterations at foundation designers own pace, reduces risk of delivering non-optimal designs and thereby reduces the overall cost of the foundation

  • We combine our experience from the ocean space with our strong skills and efficient tools to increase reliability of cables and CPS systems and reduce the risk of failures. We do this by assisting offshore wind developers with independent design analyses and 3rd party verification services and also by performing root cause investigations of failures to provide insight and prevent the failure from happening again.

    • Design Engineering of static cable systems
      • ULS & FLS design
    • Local analysis of cable cross sections
    • 3rd Party verification of cable and CPS deliveries
    • Root cause investigations

Floating wind

We have been developing floating wind concepts for over 15 years and possess a unique combination of experience, skills, and analytical tools to continue supporting the development of tomorrow’s floating wind solutions.

  • Using our understanding of the ocean environment, and project experiences with all phases from FEED and design to fabrication and installation, we assist developers with their floating wind concepts. We work together with our clients to find the optimal FOWT system configurations for project-specific locations. We perform coupled analyses combining floating foundations with turbines, using either developers’ own turbine controllers or open-source versions. We design mooring systems and cable systems to find the optimal system configurations.

  • 4Subsea designs and optimizes mooring systems tailored for specific floater concepts and locations.

  • Leveraging 4Subsea’s extensive experience from decades of riser and cable engineering in oil & gas, we understand the key drivers behind robust dynamic cable systems and how they should be tailored to each specific application.
